The Pakman Award

The Pakman Award is one of the highest accolades any organisation, company, community, group or individual in Ireland can achieve. This prestigious award is only applicable to each winner from the 14 categories listed below.

The Judges will pick a winner on the basis of their outstanding contribution and will be crowned the overall winner of The National Award for Excellence in Recycling and Waste Management.

Bring Centre of the Year

The Bring Centre of the Year is open to a manned or unmanned, purpose designed facility operated by, or on behalf of, a Local Authority or a private sector Recovery Operator. The centres should have a good site performance, high levels of recycling and other elements such as environmental awareness and marketing and communication to publicise the site. Other features to be included would be, innovativeness such as site layout, unique market ends and an unusually extensive range of materials. If you think your Bring Centre stands out from the rest – then this is the category for you!

Waste Collector of the Year - Household

This award is open to any Waste Collector who hold a current Waste Collection Permit issued by the National Waste Collection Permit Office for household waste. The following waste material types are included: packaging, mixed dry recyclables, food, hazardous and municipal solid waste (MSW). Entrants must demonstrate a first class service to customers through collection systems, communication and education/awareness programmes. Innovative initiatives in delivering higher levels of customer service and recycling should be demonstrated.

Community Recycling Project of the Year

The judging panel would like to hear from community groups or those in a partnership with their Local Authority, who are involved in community recycling projects. Applicants need to demonstrate how they have raised awareness in their communities via ventures such as composting, re-use, recycling, waste minimisation, educational talks and other recycling projects. If you feel your recycling project has enriched your community and is a contender for this prestigious award – please submit an application.

Food Waste Management

Even though food waste is very easily recycled, the current recycling rate in Ireland is very low – 10%. We would like to hear from anyone that generates food waste, such as pubs, supermarkets, restaurants, hospitals, hotels, canteens in office buildings, colleges etc. Applicants must produce more than 50kg of food waste per week and give a detailed description of how their food waste is recycled and managed. Judges will be looking out for a proactive company/organisation within the industry who are doing their utmost to fulfil their responsibilities under the Waste Management (Food Waste) Regulations 2009.

Battery Champion

This award is open to a business (retail or non), community organisation, school or individual that can demonstrate the extra steps they have taken to increase waste battery take-back for recycling and increase awareness of the need to recycle this waste stream. 

Please include the following details in your application: 

  • Short summary of business, organisation or profile of person
  • Initiatives to increase take back of waste batteries for recycling
  • Increased recycling volumes as a result of the initiative (evidence to demonstrate this)
  • Involvement of staff and/or consumers or other stakeholders
  • Management of take-back/waste before collection

Environmental Education and Awareness Initiative

The objective of this award is to promote an initiative that encourages and stimulates “outside the box” ideas that increase recycling and resource waste management. It is open to any individual, community group, school, NGO, company etc., to enter. Adjudicators will be looking for the uniqueness of the initiative, its scope, targets and its effects.

  • Positive effects it has had on the community

Business Recycling Champion

Many companies readily see the commercial advantages of recycling, aside from satisfying required legislative obligations. This award is open to an organisation or group within the business sector who exhibit and demonstrate leadership in managing and recycling their company’s waste. The “Champion” should be able to show passion and best practice examples to drive and sustain recycling with a zero waste concept.

  • Improvements on your waste management scheme
  • Recycling, re-use and waste minimisations
  • Increased recycling tonnages (figures to demonstrate this)
  • How initiatives were implemented
  • Involvement of staff or consumers

Green Transport of the Year

Transportation is a major contributor to global climate change. The winner of this award will have clearly demonstrated the following: CO2 emissions saved, developments in fuel efficiency, vehicle emissions controls and any long-term goals such as changing from fossil-based fuel to other replacements such as renewable energy. This award is open to all organisations in logistics and transport in both the private and public sectors. We want to hear from you if you are passionate about sustainable transport and what your company has done to demonstrate this.

Waste Collector of the Year - Commercial

This award is open to any Waste Collector who hold a current Waste Collection Permit issued by the National Waste Collection Permit Office for commercial waste. The following waste material types are included: packaging, food, waste electrical & electronic equipment (WEEE), batteries, end of life vehicles, end of life tyres, hazardous and municipal solid waste (MSW). Entrants must demonstrate a first class service to customers through collection systems, communication and education/awareness programmes. Innovative initiatives in delivering higher levels of customer service and recycling should be demonstrated.

Waste Recycling and Recovery Facility of the Year

The judging panel would like hear from applicants that can demonstrate their recycling and recovery capability. This category is open to all Local Authorities or Environmental Protection Agency permitted or licensed facilities that receive waste material for recycling or recovery. Included, but not limited to material recycling facilities (MRFs), manufacturing facilities that use recycled material, composting facilities, WEEE recycling, remanufacturing facilities, solid recovered fuel (SRF) and refuse derived fuel (SRF) facilities, car recycling/recovery facilities, that contribute to the recycling and recovery of waste in Ireland.

Waste Prevention Business Award

This award will be presented to a Business, Local Authority or Organisation, who can demonstrate the steps that have been taken in trying to prevent waste and use resources efficiently. Entrants will need to display the significant impact that their initiative has achieved and how it was accomplished. Applicants should show how waste prevention was communicated throughout the Organisation, be it through the implementation of campaigns, education and awareness schemes.

Professional Services Award

Have you made changes to your business to make it more sustainable? This category is open to all organisations from Law firms to Banks to Hospitals etc. Judges would like to hear from companies who have initiated new practices such as paperless billing, energy reduction, cleaner production processes or reduction of waste in order to make their business more sustainable. Your application needs to be detailed regarding past achievements and future goals.

Innovation In Waste Management

Pakman is delighted to announce the Innovation in Waste Management Award, introduced to reward excellence in innovation within the field of recycling and waste management.

This exciting new addition to the Pakman Award categories is open to any business, organisation, initiative or individual that has created a thought-provoking and effective campaign, product or service.  

This could be, but is not limited to, a mobile app, website, blog, workplace initiative, product/service, PR or social media campaign – there are no limits. No entry is too big or small, and the award will be judged on the initial idea’s inception through to its creation, launch and results.
